“The Lost Henge” is a musical journey inspired by the revelation of an ancient and enigmatic monument on the coast at Holme in Norfolk. At the close of the last century, a series of storms coupled with coastal erosion revealed the ruins of a ring of wooden posts that had been built to surround an upturned oak tree some 4000 years ago.
Despite much speculation and “expert” theory, the truth is that nobody really knows very much about it. The discovery sparked an unprecedented reaction and strength of feeling among people from all walks of life who either wanted to become involved with the monument’s future – or simply wanted to respect and appreciate the monument as a sacred relic from a forgotten world.
We can only guess at the intent and practices of the people who built it. The archetypal dreams these ancient people had, and the rituals they devised to help them make sense of the mystery of their own existence has been the inspiration behind this album. In mind, body and spirit, people today still walk many of the same paths that our ancestors walked. Through music, we believe, forgotten paths can be found again.
To enhance the journey-quality of this album there are no breaks between tracks. Each unfolds from the one before, introducing new elements and atmospheres to give listeners a real sense of place (whatever their reasons for being there).
Runestone would like to thank Medwyn for designing such an outstanding cover. More information about the archaeological site can be found on the Channel 4 website.
