secrets of avalon

Secrets of Avalon has been inspired by the ancient legends, folklore and misty landscapes surrounding the enigmatic monument Glastonbury Tor.

The album starts with a lively, up-tempo feel with some modern rhythmic touches: a musical portrayal of the bustling natural and cultural energies to be experienced in this historic site during daylight hours in a present day world. The second half of the album switches to a slower more spaceous tempo with evocative atmospheric effects as night takes hold of the fading landscape and the world of legend and ritual awakens. An echo of times long past.

Glastonbury holds high stature in UK lore and legend as well as being a personal favourite with both Chris and Robert. Much has been written about its associations with an Arthurian past, its location on powerful leylines and the arcane. Our imagery in writing this album has been a vivid recollection of the Glastonbury landscape during one of those autumnal mornings when only blurry hilltops and patches of higher ground could be seen rising through a sea of low-lying mist. The shrouded nature of the landscape seemed to symbolize the myth and magic that has surrounded this region for centuries.

In such places, you don’t just believe in magic, you become part of it.

There is something in this album for all Runestone devotees. Instruments include guitars, mandolin, wooden flutes, keyboards and percussion. A few lively rhythms as well as the slow mysterious musical textures for which Runestone is so well known.
