Mysteries was Runestone’s second album and has a slightly darker feel compared to the calm of their first album. This was undoubtedly due to an undercurrent of changes affecting the lives of both musicians during the time of writing.
Mysteries is all about healing and visualization and is intended to be helpful to anybody who is trying to come to terms with a life-changing event or seeking closure to a situation. The title of the fifth track Ancestral Paths, sums up the theme to which this album was written. At an emotional level, we continue to live through the same life-changes as our ancestors before us: births, deaths, relationships, illness and unforeseen events (both good and bad). There is comfort in knowing that the many different paths we, as individuals, take through life have all been trodden countless times before by humankind – and humankind survives. We never walk these paths alone.
Several people who have used Mysteries for visualization have remarked on the somewhat misleading choice of titles for tracks 2 & 3. Winds of Change is set against the sounds of the sea, and Primal Seas has a lot of breezy sounds and windchimes – without any hint of sea at all. Runestone would love to be able to explain why this is in some deeply profound way but have to come clean and say that the track order was changed immediately before CD production and someone forgot to tell the label designers.
Runestone would like to say a special thank you to the supremely talented and much admired Lisa Iris for her wonderful cover design.
