The acclaimed musical partnership Runestone can be said to have started in December 1991 when an excited Robert Fenner woke up to find that Father Christmas had left him a New Age music tape for Christmas. This wasn't just any old cassette - this was Excalibur by somebody called Medwyn Goodall.
At the time, the whole genre of New Age Music was something of a rarity. Unlike today, not many people were aware of its existence and it was generally available only through specialist outlets or by mail order from a few pioneer record labels. The impact on Robert was immediate. Hooked from the very first hearing, he sent the tape to a musically-obsessed friend of his, Chris Green with a short note to say "we should maybe try some writing of our own?"
From that note, writing and recording started out as a partly social, partly curiosity thing with Chris and Robert getting together once a week with an assortment of guitars and keyboards, some steam driven recording equipment and loads of cups of tea. Their aim was to produce an album of spacious, peaceful music evocative of ancient landscapes and forgotten times. After a few months, their first demo had been posted to seven record companies and accepted by five.
Following the success of their debut album "Stonehenge" plus another three albums released by New World Music in the 1990's Runestone "retired" from the New Age Music scene and lost contact until a chance meeting led to the production a new album in the summer of 2006. This album was released as "Sacred Circle". The choice of title was appropriate for all sorts of reasons but mainly because it symbolized the duo's fascination with ancient sites and because it tried to recapture the roots of their original inspiration: Medwyn Goodall's Druid trilogy. It also marked a fresh start because the record company Runestone had signed with was none other than Medwyn Goodall Music. Sometimes life can be stranger than fiction.
Robert and Chris would like to express their thanks to Medwyn for his support, his interest in Runestone and for being the man who started it all. We would also like to thank him and his wife Wendy on behalf of the millions of people who have bought his albums for providing beautiful music to a hectic world and for keeping the dream alive.
