Chris also records music under the alias Wychazel.
He took up music at the comparatively late age of 16 after his older sister, a gifted classical pianist, left home to attend the London Royal Academy of Music. Her departure left the house suddenly silent and musically lifeless. At the same time, Chris was given his first guitar and was immediately entranced by seeing a brief but memorable performance by the Flamenco guitarist Manitas de Plata. That first fleeting exposure to Flamenco proved to be a profound event in terms of future musical direction and kindled an obsessive interest in World music generally.
Early musical development started on the local live music circuit as a guitarist with numerous bands – deafening people in his quest for musical identity. During this time, Chris met another musician, a talented guitarist named Robert Fenner. Although collaboration as Runestone was yet to happen, this formative early meeting was to mark the start of an enduring friendship. For the next few years though, both Chris and Robert pursued separate musical paths.
The availability of home-recording technology in the 1980’s set Chris on a new direction. After hearing the music of Mike Oldfield, Chris became fascinated by the creative possibilities this technology could offer and started to pursue an interest in writing and recording using a variety of instruments. Early days were difficult due to the limitations and expense of the equipment involved but, piece by piece, the setup started to take shape.
At around this time Robert pushed a cassette tape through the door with a note saying “Could we try writing something like this?” The tape was the album “Excalibur” by Medwyn Goodall and was to be the catalyst that started Runestone off.
Chris plays a variety of instruments including flamenco, acoustic and E-bow guitars, keyboards, mandolin & mandola, Native American flute, various world percussion, Tibetan Bowls and Gong. He also runs occasional sound-healing workshops.
Diagnosed with ME in 1994, this restrictive condition prompted Chris to pursue a simpler, more spiritual way of life. He maintains a passionate interest in the whole New-Age ethos as well as in the many ways music and sound can be used as a force for good in the broad sphere of complementary therapies.
Drawing inspiration from the power of ancient sites and natural landscapes, his musical aim is to produce mystical soundscapes, incorporating authentic instruments, that people will find relaxing, visually stimulating and ultimately healing.
